Here’s how it works with an expired registration in Maine: you don’t need to renew the tags, you don’t need an inspection sticker, and you don’t have to get the car running. How to get your free pickup scheduled
1. Check that you have a valid Maine title in your name
Find your Maine certificate of title and confirm your name is listed as the owner and there are no undisclosed liens. The registration can be completely expired—that’s fine. If you recently moved within Maine (say from Biddeford to Bangor), your address on the title can be old; that usually doesn’t stop the donation.
2. Tell us about your car with expired registration
Call or complete the online form for Maine Motors Giveback with your vehicle’s year, make, model, approximate condition, and where it’s located—Portland, Auburn, Waterville, Brewer, or anywhere in between. Let us know the registration is expired so we can make sure the tow driver doesn’t ask you to drive it or move it on public roads.
3. Schedule your free Maine tow pickup (no driving needed)
We arrange a free pickup time that works for you—daytime, evening, or weekend in most areas. The tow truck comes to your driveway, farm, or parking lot in Maine. You don’t need plates, inspection, or insurance, because the car is winched or rolled onto the truck and transported under our carrier’s coverage, not driven on its own.
4. Sign the title and remove your Maine plates
At pickup, you’ll sign the title over to Maine Motors Giveback’s authorized buyer for Heritage for the Blind. The driver will show you exactly where to sign. Remove your Maine license plates before the car leaves; you can return them or keep them per Maine BMV rules. This helps clearly end your on-road responsibility for the vehicle.
5. Notify the Maine BMV of the transfer

Potential complications to watch for
Missing or damaged Maine title
Tip: If you don’t have the title, or it’s unreadable, we may need you to request a duplicate from the Maine BMV before we can complete the donation. An expired registration alone isn’t a problem, but donating without a proper title can be. Ask us early so we can walk you through the simplest way to replace it.
Unreleased lien still showing on the title
Tip: If a bank or credit union is still listed on the title, we may need proof the loan is paid off or a lien release letter. This is separate from registration status. We can usually accept cars with old, expired tags, but we can’t complete the transfer if another party still legally owns the vehicle on paper.
Vehicle stored on a public street or tight location
Tip: If your unregistered car is on a public road in Portland, Bangor, or another town, local ordinance may not allow a tow truck to load from that spot, or tickets could pile up. When possible, move it onto private property or a driveway beforehand, or tell us about access limits so we can plan the right truck and timing.
Out-of-state title with Maine address
Tip: If you recently moved to Maine and never registered the car here, but your title is from another state, we can often still accept it. However, rules differ by state.
